TECH Bar Documentation Guide: Create a New Connection in Contribute

So you want to change something on your website? Here’s how to access Contribute and make a connection to your page.

To start, navigate to the page you want to edit in Mozilla Firefox. If you already have the Contribute plug‐in installed, go to the upper left hand corner of the screen under
the ‘file’ tab and click ‘Edit in Contribute.’

If you do not have this plug‐in, open Contribute by searching for it under your ‘Start’ button.

Then copy the URL of the page you are currently viewing and paste it into the ‘address’ space in the middle upper portion of the welcome page of contribute and either press the ‘return’ button on your keyboard, or click ‘go’ on the Contribute page.

Now the webpage you want to edit should be showing in Contribute. If you want to navigate to another page, you can do so in Contribute, just as you would on the internet. Once you find the page you wish to edit, look at the URL space to ensure that nothing such as ‘index.html’ or ‘filename.htm’ appears at the end. If it does, erase it so that the URL ends with a ‘/’.

In order to edit your page, you must create a connection to the page within Contribute. To do so, click the ‘Create Connection’ button on the Contribute toolbar.

After you click ‘Create Connection,’ a dialogue box will appear.  Click ‘Next’ to begin.

contribute-next

Upon clicking ‘Next’ you will find two boxes, they should already be filled in for you. In the event they are not, you will want ‘Website’ to be filled in for the first box, and the URL of the website you want to edit in the second box.   Make sure for the second box that the URL ends with a ‘word/’ not a ‘word/index.html’ or anything like that. If it shows that sort of ormat, erase that portion of the URL.   Click ‘Next’ when you are ready.

In the next box, you will see a pull‐down menu. Select ‘Secure FTP(SFTP).’

Once ‘Secure FTP(SFTP)’ is chosen, three additional boxes will appear.  In the second box, type you server’s address, one of either:

bascom.brynmawr.edu (use for “live” site URLs that have www.brynmawr.edu at the beginning)
bascom1.brynmawr.edu

The third and fourth boxes will contain your email username and your web server password.  (If you have not requested an account for web editing purposes, contact the help desk to put in a ticket with a link to the site you need to edit.)

Click ‘Next’ when you are ready.

Next you will have to enter the file path to the website you want to edit.  Select the default text in the box that says “/home/yourusername” and delete it.

Then type or copy and paste in the following:

/web/www_pages/your_department

and replace “your_department” with whatever text comes after brynmawr.edu/ in your department’s website address.   For example, for www.brynmawr.edu/is/ you would enter /web/www_pages/is/ in the text field.

If you get an error after this step, go back to the first window when you entered the website address and make sure it matches the end of the address here- and that there is no filename.html or extra text after the last slash “/”.
